Description
Albi is a town in the heart of Cathar country on the Tarn River in southern France, northeast of Toulouse. Dominating the skyline is the 13th-century, red-brick Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile, a Gothic landmark with a spectacular interior. Perched high on a hill above the River Tarn, it looks more like a fortress than a cathedral, and is considered the largest brick building in the world. The bell tower is 78 meters (256 ft) tall. The brick exterior is incredibly massive, and rather austere … on the outside, but the interior practically explodes with color; the vaults and walls of the chapels are entirely covered with paintings and decoration, most during the Renaissance.
