Description
The Palazzo del Capitano, or Captain’s Palace is one of the complex of buildings that make up the Doge's Palace in Mantua Italy. It overlooks Piazza Sordello, and consists of two connected buildings erected in the years between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by Guido Bonacolsi, who ruled the city between 1299 and 1309. The one overlooking the Piazza, is the Magna Domus. Originally Romanesque in character, they underwent their first modification at the end of the fourteenth century. The Magna Domus and the Palazzo del Capitano dominate the eastern side of Piazza Sordello and its austere façade, in exposed brick, presents a typical example of medieval architecture. The façade rests on a Gothic portico, formed by pointed arches marked by columns, overlooked by a rank of Gothic mullioned windows.
