Description
Situated near the Mediterranean coast in the middle of the marshlands and lagoons of the Camargue in southern France, the fortified city of Aigues-Mortes, France is considered an outstanding example of 13th-century military architecture. It appears today very much as it did in the Middle Ages.
It was in this medieval town that 13th century King Louis IX (later to become Saint Louis) prepared to depart France for the Crusades. The Gothic-style Church of Notre-Dame-des-Sablons was built during this time. A plaque commemorates his hearing mass in the church on 25 August, 1248 before departure for the VIIth crusade and on 01 July 1270 for VIIIth crusade.
The church is made of stone and relatively simple in design, sturdy, yet humbly beautiful. The contrast between the austere medieval church and the surprisingly modern stained-glass windows (by Claude Viallat) makes this both a beautiful and unusual building.
