Description
A Foo Dog protects a temple in the Buddhist Monastery of Ganden Sumtsenling near the city of Zhongdian, China. Typically made of stone, Chinese guardian lions, or imperial guardian lions, are traditional Chinese architectural ornament. Also known as stone lions or shishi, they are known in popular English as lion dogs or foo dogs (fu dogs). They originally became popular in Chinese Buddhism and features a pair of stylized lions to protect a building from harmful spirits and people that might be a threat.
