Artist's Description
The Château de Fougères (literally, Castle of Ferns), is one of the best preserved fortified medieval castles in Europe. Begun in the 10th century as a wooden fort at a location protected by high palisades on a rocky outcrop in a basin of the River Nançon, it wasn’t until two centuries later that the massive fortress emerged as a formidable stronghold. There is an upper town and a lower town, so there is a lot of climbing and descending hundreds of steps throughout the day. The fortress itself was magnificent, with its 13 surviving towers and keeps. The belfry, high atop the city was built in 1397, and gave ordinary people access to timekeeping, previously the preserve of the church and nobility. Large sections of the original ramparts are still standing, but only one of the town’s four gates survives.
Fougères is designated a “Ville Fleuri” or City of Flowers with many floral displays and beautiful gardens, and it works to maintain that classification.
About W Chris Fooshee
'The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.' ~ Marcel Proust, writer, Paris, 1871-1922. My photographs are not merely a record of what was before my camera, but rather my visualization of the place and time as I remember discovering it, be it a particular mood, impression, or ambiance. These images may bring back memories of your own travels or they might inspire, you in some small way to venture off and maybe discover exciting, new landscapes of your own. But in the meantime, consider placing one of these photographs on your wall as a window to foreign lands. A note to those who purchase one of my images, you have my deepest thanks. I am honored that you have chosen one of my photographs...
