Description
The Spider Lily is neither a spider nor a lily. The word “lily” is often used as a catch-all name for dozens of different plant families and genera that have large, colorful blooms. True lilies usually have six flower petals, six stamens and three-chambered capsular fruits. Crinums aren't actually lilies or even related to them, they are in the amaryllis family instead. Still, the common name is Crinum Lily, or Spider Lily, … whatever.
Regardless of who their relatives are, Crinum flowers add a sense of drama and color to any garden.
This specimen is in Harry P. Leu Gardens, a beautiful 50-acre botanical oasis just minutes from Downtown Orlando. It is composed of nearly 50 acres (200,000 m2) of landscaped grounds and lakes, with meandering trails under 200-year-old oaks and forests of camellias. The mild subtropical climate of central Florida allows for a wonderful mix of temperate and tropical plants that inspires visitors to appreciate and understand plants.
