A morning stroll in Bergamo. Located about 40 km northeast of Milan, Bergamo is a city in Lombardy, Italy situated in foothills of the Bergamo Alps that begin immediately north of the town. The town has two centers, the "Città alta" or Upper city is on top of an Alpine hilltop surrounded by Venetian walls built in the 16th century. This is the historic center of Bergamo, a hilltop medieval town; and the "Città bassa" or Lower city is the modern urban center of Bergamo.
Though Bergamo was the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic and humanitarian crisis in Italy. It was in the northern area that the first Italian case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in February of last year. At the start of July, 2021 there were 33,782 confirmed deaths with the virus - far more than any other region.
