In the early Middle Ages Bergen was isolated from the rest of Norway. But it became an important seaport and a member of the Hanseatic League as well as Norway's capital. As it grew, the city was opened to Europe, with a large fleet of wooden sailing ships carrying dried cod to the European markets, mainly in Italy, Spain & Portugal, for their bacalao and stoccafisso dishes.
