Beautiful scene, great read

Artist's Description

Along a coffin route that traverses the hillside towards Grasmere. Coffin routes or corpse roads around the UK, were traditionally used in medieval times to transport the dead across the countryside from parishes that didn’t have burial grounds to the churches with consecrated ground. The beautiful, peaceful route from Ambleside and Rydal to the 13th Century St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere, would have provided solace for the friends and family members following the pall bearers whose task was far more laborious. Along the route were coffin rests, two large stone blocks, the back block where the coffin bearers rested their load, and a front one where they rested themselves and likely ate a meal. Notably, St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere is the location of the Wordsworth family graves.
Today, for the living, the Coffin Trail provides no less of a scenic ramble across the Lake District countryside, yet its original use reminds us that we must take every opportunity enjoy life.

About W Chris Fooshee

W Chris Fooshee

'The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.' ~ Marcel Proust, writer, Paris, 1871-1922. My photographs are not merely a record of what was before my camera, but rather my visualization of the place and time as I remember discovering it, be it a particular mood, impression, or ambiance. These images may bring back memories of your own travels or they might inspire, you in some small way to venture off and maybe discover exciting, new landscapes of your own. But in the meantime, consider placing one of these photographs on your wall as a window to foreign lands. A note to those who purchase one of my images, you have my deepest thanks. I am honored that you have chosen one of my photographs...
