Work was started on the Catedral de la Almudena at the end of the 19th century on the site of the old Santa María la Mayor church to honor the patron virgin of Madrid. The first stone was laid in 1883, but progress was extremely slow. The cathedral wasn't consecrated for worship Pope John Paul III until 1993. While the inside of the church is in a Gothic style, the outside is baroque.
