Bruges (Brugge in Dutch) in northwestern Belgium’s Flanders region, is one of Europe's best preserved cities. Once a major nexus of trade in medieval Europe, and of art and architecture during the Renaissance, its picturesque cobbled lanes and dreamy canals link photogenic market squares lined with soaring towers, historical churches and lane after lane of old whitewashed almshouses.
