An egg/cone shaped stone sculpture by internationally renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy near Warcop, UK. This is one of several erected between 1996 and 2009 by Goldsworthy in local ”pinfolds” that were originally used to pen stray animals until their owners came and paid to release them. Often situated in villages rather than in fields, these cairns are fun to search out.
Andy Goldsworthy makes sculptures from materials such as snow, twigs, grass, stones, or clay as he blurs the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and nature. Working within both rural and urban environments, Goldsworthy’s sculptures embrace an elegant organic precision—at first. But as nature takes its course, the works decay or otherwise change, while only photographs and drawings preserve the ephemeral original works.
