Description
The bustling town of Albi has two principal claims to fame: a very monumental cathedral and a truly marvelous painter. Rising up abruptly from the south bank of the River Tarn, the Cathédrale Ste-Cécile is one of France's most monumental Gothic structures and one of the largest brick buildings in the world.
In the foreground the Pont du Tarn , as it was originally called, was built between 1035 and 1042. The oldest parts visible today, however, date from the 13th century.
The artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born in Albi in 1864, The Toulouse-Lautrec museum in the heart of Albi was recently renovated and the newly opened institution is a work of art in its own right.
