Well-preserved walls with arched portals, like this medieval Porte de Rous, and centuries-old buildings, Cordes-sur-Ciel is an enchanting hilltop village crowning a steep promontory in the northern reaches of the Tarn département in France. The village was built in 1222 by the Cathars to protect themselves from papal crusaders.
