Description
Situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the dramatic three-arched Devil’s Bridge spans the River Lune near Kirkby Lonsdale and is considered one of the finest bridges in England of its period. It is thought that it was built by the Abbey of St Mary of York, and probably dates from the 12th or 13th century.
Local legend has it that the Devil appeared to an old woman who lived on the banks of the Lune with a few animals. One night her cow strayed across the river and she could not coax it back from across the stream. The Devil appeared offering to build a bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross over it, and the woman agreed. Once the bridge was finished, the woman met the devil at the bridge and agreed to fulfil her part of the bargain. She then took a bun from her bag and threw it across the bridge. Her dog chased it across to retrieve it, hence outwitting the Devil who howled in anger and vanished in a cloud of brimstone.
