Description
In a scene that could be centuries old costumed local officials gather outside during a ceremony in Strasbourg Cathedral de Notre-Dame, known as one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in Europe. The Cathedral is over one thousand years old. Located on the site of a much older Roman temple. Construction began in 1015 but was destroyed by a fire, then started anew in the 12th century when the Gothic style of architecture had started to become popular.
Strasbourg, the capital of France’s Alsace region, is the product of a centuries-long struggle between France and Germany. With one of Europe’s largest medieval quarters, the cobbled streets and canals of the Grand Île and Petite France weave between creaking black and white half-timbered houses that have survived from the 1500s and 1600s.
Strasbourg is also the formal seat of the European Parliament and its location near the German border, you can see German and French influences in the blending of culture and architecture. Its Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame features an astronomical clock and views of the Rhine River from partway up its impressive spire.
