Description
During the Middle Ages Ghent was a prominent city-state. Today it’s a university town and cultural center. The city is known for its pedestrians-only center and medieval architecture such as Saint Nicholas' Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk). This impressive 13th- to 15th-century church is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Ghent. Built of Tournai bluestone on the site of an old Romanesque church. It is an example of the Scheldt Gothic style. This style was characterized by its use of blue-gray stone from the Tournai area, the single large tower above the crossing, and the slender turrets at the building's corners.
