Description
In a peaceful setting, just outside the ancient town walls of Avila, Spain stands the Real Monasterio de Santo Tomás (Royal Monastery of Saint Thomas) founded in 1483 by María Dávila and Tomás de Torquemada, the first Grand Inquisitor of Spain.
The Catholic Monarchs also used the monastery as a summer palace and attended mass there, while tribunals of the Inquisition once met in the choir.
Despite its history, the monastery is a place of serenity, with three beautiful cloisters. Here is an image of the two-story Claustro de los Reyes (Royal Cloister). This cloister is surrounded by the other areas of the Royal Palace. It has 40 arches on the ground floor and 56 on the upper floor, decorated with style of beading typical in Ávila.
