Description
An extraordinary masterpiece in tile, brick, stone and stained glass, the 2146-seat Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall is a pinnacle of Barcelona’s Modernista architecture. Created for the Orféo society, a local choral group, it was envisioned as a source of pride in Catalan culture and identity and as a temple for the Catalan Renaissance or Renaixença.
Using some of the best artisans in Catalonia at the time, it was built between 1905 and 1908 by Domènech i Montaner, an incredible architect whose masterpieces are often overlooked in favor of Barcelona’s other famous architect Antoni Gaudí, and yet he is perhaps just as influential in terms of the Catalan art form of “modernism”.
