Description
Set atop a big chunk of tufo volcanic stone above fields streaked with vines, olive groves, and cypress trees, Orvieto is one of the most impressive hill towns in central Italy. Populated since Etruscan times, its austere center is classic medieval, with weaving lanes, brown stone houses and cobbled piazzas.
But what distinguishes the town from its neighbors is its cathedral, the Duomo di Orvieto; Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta or Orvieto Cathedral.
One of Italy's greatest Gothic churches, it was built between 1290 and 1320, and is stunning both inside and out. I first saw its sensational facade unexpectedly as I turned a corner, and there, framed between two buildings and the clear blue, winter’s sky was the monumental, Gothic facade, divided by four pillars, that has been compared to a medieval altarpiece . Incredible mosaics decorate the façade and the beautiful bronze doors sculpted by Emilio Greco only begin to round out the exterior.
