Description
The oldest and most picturesque of three bridges across the Orbieu river that separates the French village of Lagrasse from its 8th-century Benedictine abbey, is the 12th-century arched stone bridge (le pont vieux), with its cobblestone roadway.
The beautiful medieval village of Lagrasse is nestled at the heart of the Corbières mountains, with the peaceful River Orbieu flowing through it. This is the Corbières wine region, renowned for the wine produced in the surrounding hills. The village is also famous for its prestigious medieval Benedictine abbey, the biggest in Languedoc. The narrow medieval streets of the old village are great for wandering and discovering its rich architectural heritage, and it is ranked as one of "the most beautiful villages in France". Though busy in summer, it retains its quiet nature as the shops still close for lunch.
