Description
Ancient theater and shops in the center of Sideng market square. It is a place of considerable importance, with this intact theater, guesthouses for merchants, a temple precinct, and protective gates. A historic market town situated between Dali and Lijiang, Shaxi was one of the important trading centers on the Tea-Horse Caravan Road for several hundred years. It was part of a trade link that first spread across China and Asia from its origins in Pu'er county in Yunnan. It is probably the best preserved of the caravan oasis towns from the era – and the only one with a still-functioning market, where Bai and Yi villagers converge to trade goods and livestock.
