Description
A Ming-era, Imperial guardian lion sculpture in front of a Forbidden City building in Beijing. Always in pairs, one male with a ball and one female, like this one with a cub—were thought to protect the building from harmful spirits. They are sometimes referred to as lion dogs or foo dogs. Originally used in imperial Chinese palaces and tombs, the concept subsequently spread to other parts of Asia.
