Description
The fortified city of Carcassonne or Cité Médiévale is easily one of the oldest, largest, and most impressive medieval citadels in Europe.
Construction was begun when the Romans fortified the hilltop around 100 BC. The citadel’s long double surrounding walls interspersed by 52 towers, are about a mile in circumference, and were in place by 1130.
The massive structure has a fairy-tale appearance from a distance, while inside it lends itself to wandering lovely narrow, cobbled streets, and imagining days of crusades, sieges, and knights. It is France’s second-most visited tourist spot after the Tour Eiffel.
