Description
View of the cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore from Giotto's Campanile, next to the cathedral in Florence, Italy. Completed in 1436, a dome of the size of the Florence Duomo was considered impossible to build before the Renaissance. Brunelleschi came up with an innovative design that featured two domes, one within the other, using a distinct herringbone brick pattern and a system of four internal horizontal stone and iron chains, serving as ‘barrel hoops’. The octagonal dome remained the largest in the world for the next 400 years, and it is still the largest masonry dome ever built. Look closely and you can see tourists that climbed the 463 steps to the top.
