Description
St. Augustine, Florida, is America's oldest city and home to the Castillo de San Marcos the only 17th-century masonry fortress still in existence in the United States. Work began on the fortress in 1672 by, the Spanish to guard their trade routes. Workers were brought in from Havana to build the fort out of Coquina, a local limestone. Labor for the fort's construction included Spaniards and Indians, plus "some" convicts and slaves, and was completed in 1696.
The Castillo survived fifteen battles and sieges over the centuries, but even after being shelled with cannonballs and gunfire during a two-month siege in 1702, the fort was never taken by force. However, possession of the fort has changed six times, all peaceful. The flags of five different countries flew over its limestone walls as it served as a stronghold during wars between England and France, England and America, and America's Union North and Confederate South.
