Description
Blue shutters, blue-striped awnings, and lace curtains festoon a pair of windows in Arles, a French city on the Mediterranean coast on the Camargue marshes at the mouth of the Rhone River. Arles has been settled since before 800BCE, Romans took the town in 123BCE and expanded it into an important city. Today, many impressive remnants of Roman buildings dominate parts of the old town, while narrow cobbled streets, and shady squares are reminiscent of scenes from a Van Gogh canvas. In the late 1880s, Vincent van Gogh spent a little over a year painting some of his most iconic works there.
