Description
Known as the largest Art Nouveau complex in the world, the Hospital de Sant Pau is filled with stained glass windows, fine tilework, paintings, and mosaics illuminated by massive windows. Architect Domènech i Montaner felt that a bright and cheerful environment would aid patients in the healing process, thus he designed the hospital around a tranquil courtyard with beautifully landscaped gardens filled with statues of angels and gargoyles. It is indeed a place of restfulness and beauty.
The 27-building complex took up the equivalent of around nine city blocks, were interconnected by hygienic, ceramic-tile lined underground tunnels. Each of the buildings were dedicated to a different a different medical specialty, so the tunnels allowed patients to be taken from operating rooms to the wards safely.
