Description
Tintern Abbey was founded on 9 May 1131 and the great church was built between 1269 and 1301 on the Welsh bank of the River Wye just north of Chepstow. The Abbey was left to fall into picturesque ruin after the monks were booted out by Henry VIII in 1536. The soaring Gothic arches attest to the monastic wealth and power the king so coveted. During the Romantic period, many poets and painters such as Turner and Wordsworth visited the Abbey because of its beauty.
