Description
Ostia Antica is a large archaeological site 15 miles (25 kilometers) southwest of Rome, at the location of the harbor city of ancient Rome. At the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia was established between the 7th and 3rd Centuries BCE as Rome's seaport. The site is notable for the excellent preservation of its many ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics. Due to silting Ostia fell slowly into decay between 400 and 500 ACE, and was finally abandoned in the 9th century.
