Description
With the tall, slim steeple of Sainte Perpétue in the background, the Pradier Fountain is in the center of Nîmes, France, a city in the Occitanie region of southern France that was once an important outpost of the Roman Empire. The fountain was dedicated in 1851 and named after the sculptor Jean Jacques Pradier. Each of the surrounding four sculptures depicted on the fountain represent the main rivers of the region, they are inscribed in Latin – Nemausa (this statue), Vardo, Ura and Rhodano.
The city was established by the Romans, on the edge of the Mediterranean plain, some twenty-five miles inland from the sea, it became a Roman colony as Colonia Nemausus sometime before 28 BCE; and to this day Nîmes has the finest collection of Roman remains outside Italy. Its impressive arena is one of the best-preserved of the Roman world, and the temple called Maison Carrée , considered one of the most complete and remarkable buildings surviving from the Roman Empire.
